The Responsible Coaching Movement
The Responsible Coaching Movement (RCM) is a multi-phase system-wide movement, coordinated by the Coaching Association of Canada (CAC) and the Canadian Centre for Ethics in Sport (CCES), and is a call to action to help ensure the impact of coaches is a positive one for athletes, coaches, and our Canadian Sport Community, address the role coaches play with issues relating to the health and safety of athletes, both on and off the field of play.
Volleyball Manitoba’s Board of Directors have approved the pledge ‘to align our practices with Phase 1 of the Responsible Coaching Movement (RCM) and is committed to ensuring that our athletes and coaches are protected’.
Phase 1 of the RCM involves three aspects, (1) Background screening* (2) Ethics Training**, and (3) Rule of Two***.
*all coaches and staff within Volleyball Manitoba Programs are required to complete criminal record and child abuse registry checks.
**all coaches and staff within Volleyball Manitoba Programs are required to complete ethics training including the online ‘Respect in Sport’ module and the NCCP ‘Making Ethical Decision’ workshop.
***The ‘Rule of Two’ is new, and outlines that there will always be at least two screened coaches/adults (one of which must also be of the same gender) with an athlete, especially a minor athlete, when in a potentially vulnerable situations. This means that any one-on-one interaction between a coach and an athlete must take place within earshot and view of the second coach/adult (with the exception of medical emergencies). Vulnerable situations can include closed doors meetings, travel, and training environments amongst others.
