Scholarships & Funds

The Lord Selkirk Royals was where Dale’s volleyball career began, and where he also won two provincial championships. He went on to play on provincial teams, was a member of the 1985 and 1987 Canada Games Teams, claiming silver and bronze medals, and was a member of the Canadian Jr. National Team that competed at the 1991 Pan American Games.

Dale’s volleyball and academic aspirations took him to the University of Manitoba where he completed his B.Sc. (Dean Honor Role) in 1989 and went on to complete his medical degree in 1993, receiving the Family Medicine Award. After receiving his medical degree, Dale completed a specialty program of internal medicine in June 1997 and had begun a sub-specialty in infectious diseases.

During his five years of university, Dale managed to balance his academics with his volleyball and played for the Bison’s, winning a national championship in 1991. During this time, Dale was a five time All-Canadian and was named the CIAU (CIS / U SPORTS) Player of the Year in 1990.

Volleyball was very important part of Dale’s life and he made many lifelong friendships with both players and coaches. He continued to be an active member of the volleyball community as vice-president of Volleyball Manitoba.

Dale passed away on September 15, 1998, after a year long battle with cancer.

Family, friends and colleagues of Dale, have come together to form $1,000 scholarships in his name to be presented annually to graduating high school volleyball players in Manitoba. Application information is sent out annually to all high schools across Manitoba.

Scholarship Criteria:

• Academic Excellence (minimum 75% average in his/her marks)
• Volleyball ability and leadership
• Extra curricular activities
• Currently attending High School (S4) and pursuing post-secondary studies after graduation
• Special consideration may be given to athletes who meet any of the following additional criteria:

1. reside in a rural Manitoba community,
2. have completed on a Volleyball Manitoba Provincial Team Program or
3. who will be participating on a varsity volleyball program at a Canadian University or College.

2023 application deadline: Friday, December 8, 2023.

During her lifetime, Nikki Redekop was inspiration to all who knew her because of her strength and determination both on and off the volleyball court. She loved life and lived by the motto “Life is a highway, I want to ride it all night long”. This scholarship is in memory of Nikki and her vibrant spirit that was epitomized in her life. Nikki played on the University of Winnipeg Wesmen Women’s Volleyball Team for two years and on a Senior Women’s Team prior to her passing.

The Nikki Redekop Volleyball Scholarships ($500) are available to graduating high school students pursuing academics and volleyball excellence at post-secondary levels.  Up to two scholarships will be awarded annually at the Volleyball Manitoba Annual Awards & Hall of Fame Banquet held in June each year.  If sufficient funds exist, more than two scholarships may be awarded.

Application Process & Scholarship Criteria:

• Applications for 2023 will be accepted until May 12, 2023 and application forms can be found HERE.
• Must be a Manitoba Resident
• Preference given to Volleyball Manitoba Provincial Team participants
• Applications must include the following information:
  • Name of applicant
  • School and club team involvement along with position played, team and individual accomplishments
  • Coaches names and contact
  • Post-secondary volleyball and academic plans

Stefan Savoie inspired passion in the game of Volleyball in both indoor and beach and were staples in his life.  He was the energy on the court, he was the player who changed momentum, he was the athlete that every coach knew was needed to inspire passion on the court.  Stefan excelled in both disciplines of the sport he loved. This was evident through his experiences on his high school team, his club teams, his provincial teams and his university team. The pinnacle of his career was being with Team Canada and representing Manitoba at the Canada Games in Beach Volleyball. His competitive nature, compassion for his teammates and thirst to excel was never compromised.  This scholarship is to recognize athletes who represent that passion for the sport of volleyball, just as Stefan did in his life.

This scholarship will be awarded annually at the Graduating All Star Banquet to a Grade 12 volleyball athlete.

Scholarship Criteria:

• Must be a Manitoba Resident
• Must be a Grade 12 student
• Scholarships will be awarded in the amount of $1000 to 1 student annually for Post Secondary Education.

Nomination Process:

• Athletes must be nominated by an individual who is able to provide the following:
• 150 word mini biography of the athlete.
• Video submission demonstrating the athlete’s court presence, spirit of sport, team and passion during practices and/or matches.
• Letter of support from a coach, teammate, teacher or other.

Wezer Bridle was an ambassador, an icon and a founder of the sport of Volleyball in Manitoba and in Canada. Wezer was active in building the sport from the 1950’s through to his passing in January of 2015. He was included in the first class of inductees into the Volleyball Manitoba Hall of Fame in 1999 as well as the Volleyball Canada Hall of Fame in 2000, and was inducted into the Sports Manitoba Hall of Fame in 1988.

The Wezer Bridle Cup is an annual tournament started in 2016 by Volleyball Manitoba and the Winnipeg Men’s Volleyball League, raising funds towards this Support Fund named in his memory. The fund, along with the tournament, are an opportunity to celebrate his life and recognize his life-long contributions to the sport of volleyball.

The Wezer Bridle Volleyball Support Fund provides assistance towards volleyball participation fees to young athletes with financial barriers. To apply, please complete the application form:
