‘SAM ROBERTS BAND TO HEADLINE
MTS SUPER-SPIKE TAKING PLACE JULY 21 & 22’
‘TEAM REGISTRATION NOW OPEN & EARLY BIRD EVENT PASSES
ON SALE FRIDAY APRIL 7’

Winnipeg – MTS Super-Spike presented by Bud Light, is excited to welcome acclaimed rockers ‘Sam Roberts Band’ as this year’s headliner. MTS Super-Spike, which is taking place July 21st & 22nd at Maple Grove Rugby Park, combines Western Canada’s largest outdoor/beach volleyball tournament with a weekend long concert series, all set in a festival atmosphere.

Making their much anticipated first ever appearance at MTS Super-Spike this July, the multi award winning Sam Roberts Band just released their sixth studio album, critically acclaimed ‘Terraform,’ recently nominated for Juno Rock Album of the year.  Since their breakout in 2002, Sam Roberts Band has earned a stellar reputation as a live band.  They have received immense success in Canada and the US touring extensively, and always receiving glowing critical reviews while putting out hit after hit throughout their six albums. Along with Sam Roberts Band, MTS Super-Spike will feature a dozen live acts throughout the weekend including local Hip Hop stars The Lytics, Toronto rising sensation ‘Grandson’ who was recently signed to RCA records, The Nobel Thiefs, the Reverend Rambler, Pernell Reichert, the Dust Rhinos and more.

Public interested in registering a team for this year’s event can do so by visiting www.superspike.ca. Early bird registration fees for teams are only $49 per person through to June 9th. All MTS Super-Spike tournament participants receive free access for the concert series and on-site festivities.

Early bird weekend passes for non-tournament participants will be on-sale this Friday April 7th at 10am, and can be purchased for only $25 through www.superspike.ca. After June 9th they will go up to regular price of $35.

The event, now in its sixteenth year, also acts as a significant local charitable fundraiser with over $1 million raised to date.  Formerly a fundraiser for the National Women’s Volleyball Team who recently relocated to Richmond, B.C, MTS Super-Spike now splits its proceeds between three charitable organizations including Volleyball Manitoba as a staple annual partner, and two rotating new charities each year selected through an annual application process.  KidSport Manitoba, and the True North Youth Foundation have been selected as the two other MTS Super-Spike charitable recipients for 2017.

“We are absolutely thrilled that KidSport Manitoba has been selected as one of MTS Super-Spike’s charities this year,” said Laurel Read, Sport Manitoba’s Interim CEO. “Sport Manitoba ensures that 100% of all KidSport donations go directly to registration fees and equipment removing financial barriers that prevent kids from playing organized sport. This support means we get more kids off the sidelines and into the game.”

“The True North Youth Foundation is very excited to be one of the charities of choice for MTS Super-Spike 2017,” stated Dwayne Green, Executive Director of the True North Youth Foundation. “Not only will the funds help us develop beach volleyball courts at Camp Manitou but it will allow us to be a part of an event that has become part of the fabric of summer in Manitoba. When an event can be created that raises money for charities across the Province and allows participants to have a lot of fun everyone wins!!”

“The loss of the National Women’s Volleyball Team this past year with their move to Richmond, after hosting the program in Winnipeg for 24 years, was definitely a disappointment for the local volleyball community,” stated Volleyball Manitoba Executive Director John Blacher. “However, sometimes losses bring opportunities and that is definitely the case now with Volleyball Manitoba as we assist with the continued organization of MTS Super-Spike, now benefiting on an annual basis with event proceeds supporting volleyball development in Manitoba. We look forward to working with the MTS Super-Spike committee moving forward to help make the event even bigger and better!”
